Join this exciting team who will produce over 35 free events in the park this summer.

We will help focus your tasks on your skillset. You will work with the Programming and Marketing committees to help produce and promote our programming.

Those with strong writing skills will help write our newsletters, e-blasts and work with the Development committee on grants and sponsorship.

Young Reporters for the Environment

The National Wildlife Federation is running the first-ever Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) is an international program with more than 25 participating countries. Students between the ages of 13-18 are invited to participate in YRE-USA by reporting on environmental issues in their communities in writing, photos, or video. National winners in each category will earn recognition, great prizes and the chance to advance to the international competition.

Students may participate as individuals or as part of a class or group.

JUNIOR ASSOCIATE BOARD: Dedicated teens who are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of people touched by cancer. The mission of the Junior Associate Board is to promote awareness of GCNYC in the community it serves, organize initiatives  and events,  provide volunteer service & earn community service hours .   As ambassadors of GCNYC, members of this special group have the opportunity to participate in many different ways including fundraising, events, public relations, outreach and recruitment of new members.

UPCOMING:  Our 4th Annual It’s Always Something Teen Essay Contest.  This contest provides a forum for teens in grades 9-12, living in NYC or Long Island, to write about their experience with cancer, whatever that may be.  Information will go out when the contest launches in early 2013.

Compost Volunteer Opportunity

Calling all compost volunteers! We’re hosting volunteer workdays at our East River Park Compost Yard every Monday from 9AM-1PM. We rely on volunteers to help divert food scraps from landfills and build awareness about composting. Volunteer tasks include chopping and raking food scraps to be composted, sifting finished compost, and much more.

BRONX ZOO:
As a docent with the Friends of the Zoo, you’ll help out the Education Department by leading schoolchildren and other groups on guided tours of exhibits and assisting in our environmental education programs. As a volunteer ambassador, you’ll work with the Guest Relations Department to help provide the best possible guest experience to our zoo visitors.

CENTRAL PARK ZOO:
Become a Wildlife Guide at one of the nation’s greatest institutions. You’ll assist the Education Department at the Central Park Zoo in engaging in inquiry-based discussions with zoo visitors, interacting with guests at the information cart, offering administrative support, leading tours, reading to children during our story time activities, and participating in a variety of events and educational programs.

NEW YORK AQUARIUM:
As an Aquarium volunteer you will help staff exhibits; assist keepers with animal care, training, and exhibit maintenance; teach visitors about marine conservation; or work at events and education programs. We offer three volunteer programs with unique responsibilities.

PROSPECT PARK ZOO:
As a Discovery Guide, you’ll answer questions about animals, direct visitors around the zoo, help out at special events and run children’s activities.

As an Education Docent you’ll interpret animal exhibits, lead tours, interact with families in the Discovery Center, assist with educational programs, and have the opportunity to train as a narrator for daily Sea Lion feedings.

Visions Services for the Blind

VISIONS has a volunteer program starting at age 16.  High school volunteers as part of VISIONS intergenerational activities assist with reading, escorting clients in the community and helping in activities and projects. In addition to the these, adult volunteers also teach classes or workshops.

We currently offer bowling, photography, ceramics, percussion, quilting, knitting, arts & crafts, library, radio station and computer classes. Volunteers set their own schedules based on classroom space availability on a particular day and time. If you are interested in starting a class, you must submit a brief proposal.

Program Incentives:   Students receive a letter of recommendation, community service hours, metrocards if needed, a gift card of his/her choice, and certificate upon completion of program.
