Political Internships

INTERN FOR CITY COUNCIL MEMBER ROSIE MENDEZ
Internship: Duties include constituent work, helping those who call our office because, for example, their street is long overdue for cleaning, or they live in public housing and the lock on their lobby door is broken. Write replies to those who send their opinions on a piece of legislation to our office,work on parts of the newsletter, and recently draft a testimony for Rosie to present about a construction site in the district. Office work organizing excel spreadsheets, updating contact lists, answering phones and so forth. Attend meetings and hearings with Rosie and other staff.
Hours: This is a time commitment, but the schedule can be flexible. It is a volunteer position over the school year and stipended during the summer.

INTERN WITH NY STATE ASSEMBLY MEMBER BRIAN KAVANAGH 
Internship:  Interns will participate in the full range of activities of a busy district office. They will assist in meeting with community and advocacy groups; researching and responding to correspondence; drafting testimony and talking points; working on community based projects, events, and initiatives; assisting and organizing press conferences, and attending events and meetings.
Hours: full- or part-time internships
Qualifications:We seek interns with a genuine commitment to public service, strong written and oral communication skills, ability to conduct research and think analytically, and computer proficiency. Experience with spreadsheets and databases is especially valuable. Interns must be able to multi-task and work in a team setting as well as independently.

INTERN FOR CITY COUNCIL MEMBER MARGARET CHIN 
Internship: Interns will learn how to address constituent issues.  Some administrative work will be required. Intern will also be asked to perform field work and conduct research on local issues and gather information for Council Member’s outreach efforts.
Hours: 20-35 hours a week
Qualifications: Seeking students who have a strong interest in learning more about city government, have good people skills, and who are organized and proficient in writing. Applicants should be very comfortable using Microsoft Office Suite. Chinese or Spanish language skills are a plus. Long-time residents of NYC strongly preferred, council district residency a plus.

INTERN FOR SENATOR DANIEL SQUADRON 
Internship: Interns will work closely a member of the office staff on legislative research, scheduling, communications and media, correspondence, event planning and office management. Students will be exposed to various components of the Senate office, will attend hearings and meetings, and will participate in planning and strategy discussions with Senate staff and outside advocates.
Hours:  Internships are unpaid and students are expected to work 25-35 hours weekly
Qualifications: A successful candidate is a self-starter who will be able to work at least three days per week, has strong writing, communicating and organizational skills, as well as a passion for government. Knowledge of or connections to the 25th Senate District are a plus.
