Volunteering @ 9/11 Memorial & Museum

We are seeking volunteers who are outgoing, courteous and have excellent communication skills for the following positions:

Visitor Services Volunteers

Volunteers in Visitor Services enhance the visitor experience by exhibiting exceptional customer service, directing visitors in a safe and efficient manner, and attending to visitors’ needs as they engage with the Memorial Museum’s exhibitions, programs, and amenities. This role is based in the Museum and on the outdoor Memorial. We currently need Visitor Services Volunteers some weekday mornings and afternoons, and weekends. Training is held every six to eight weeks and lasts about six hours.

Retail Greeter Volunteers

Volunteers assist our staff at our Museum Store, the Museum Store at Vesey Street or outdoors on the retail information cart on the Memorial plaza. Volunteers greet visitors and provide accurate and helpful information that enhances their visit, including information regarding products and their connection to the Memorial. Training is held on an individual basis and lasts about eight hours.

Museum Docents

Volunteer docents help support the Museum’s educational mission. Docents provide interpretive services to visitors through thematic talks that include detailed information about artifacts, the World Trade Center site and the history of 9/11. Our extensive training totals 60 to 70 hours over a four month period. Docent training is held approximately twice a year with the next session due sometime in 2017. Please complete an application form to be included on the wait list.

Time Commitment
Volunteers pledge four to five hours a week for at least six months, or 1 year for Museum Docents. We sincerely hope for longer terms of service.

Eligibility
Volunteer positions are open to all individuals who meet the expectations outlined, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age or disability. All volunteers must be at least 16 years old and agree to a background check conducted by the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

Selection Process
All potential volunteers must:
Complete an application and supply two verifiable references.
Agree to and pass a background check.
Pass an informal interview and complete all training requirements.
